This means the practical work of distinguishing quality handcrafted goods from mass-produced alternatives falls to the buyer.
Material as a starting indicator
The materials used in a handcrafted item often reveal more than the label. A turned wooden bowl made from a single piece of locally sourced maple will have grain patterns that vary with the tree, tool marks that can be traced to specific passes of a lathe or hand chisel, and minor dimensional inconsistencies that confirm it was not cast or cut by CNC machinery. A bowl with perfectly uniform thickness and no visible grain variation was almost certainly shaped mechanically, regardless of whether a person sanded it.
For textiles, the presence of hand-spun yarn in woven goods is identifiable by the slight variation in thread diameter along its length — machine-spun yarn maintains a consistency that hand-spinning cannot exactly replicate. Similarly, hand-knitted goods contain tension variations between rows that reflect the knitter's physical state during the work. These are features, not flaws.
Construction details in ceramics and pottery
Pottery is one of the craft categories most subject to confusion in Canadian markets, partly because so many forms — mugs, bowls, vases — are available at mass-market prices in styles that imitate handmade aesthetics.
Genuine wheel-thrown ceramics have a spiral compression mark on the interior base where the clay was centred before being pulled up. Slip-cast pieces — produced by pouring liquid clay into a mould — have a seam line inside or outside the form where the mould halves met, and no spiral mark. Looking inside the base of a mug or bowl at a craft market table is a standard way to identify which method was used.

In the jewellery category, the distinction between hand-fabricated and cast work matters both to quality and to price. Hand-fabricated pieces are cut, shaped, soldered, and finished by the maker working directly with metal sheet or wire. Cast pieces begin as a model — sometimes hand-carved in wax, sometimes designed digitally — from which a mould is made and molten metal poured. Both processes require skill; neither is inherently superior. But the label "handmade" on a cast piece that was then minimally finished by the maker sits in a grey area that varies by the norms of individual craft communities.
A reliable indicator of fabricated metalwork is the presence of solder lines at joins — these are visible under close examination as a slightly different colour from the surrounding metal, and their placement reflects intentional design decisions by the maker. Cast pieces typically have no solder lines but may have minor porosity (tiny air pockets) visible at the surface under magnification.
What makers can tell you
Most artisans at Canadian craft markets are willing to describe their process in specific terms. A potter who fires in an electric kiln can tell you what cone temperature they use and how long the firing cycle runs. A weaver working on a floor loom can describe the fibre content of their yarn and where it was sourced. A woodworker can identify the species of wood in a piece and explain whether it came from a local mill or was reclaimed.
Vague answers — "I make it myself" without any process detail — are not necessarily dishonest, but they differ from the kind of specific technical knowledge that comes with long practice. Most experienced craft buyers treat specificity as a proxy for authenticity, not because it proves anything absolutely, but because genuine makers tend to have ready answers about the details of their work.
Price as a rough calibration
Handcrafted goods cost more than comparable mass-produced items because they take longer to make and exist in smaller quantities. A hand-thrown stoneware mug that took 45 minutes of throwing time, trimming, two firings, and individual glazing will not be priced at $8. When market prices seem inconsistent with the claimed production method, that discrepancy is worth examining before purchasing.
The Government of Canada maintains guidelines for "Made in Canada" labelling that require a product to be last substantially transformed in Canada and have Canadian content accounting for at least 51% of the total direct costs of production. These standards govern labelling law but do not specifically regulate the use of "handmade" — a gap that craft associations have noted in submissions to consumer protection consultations.
Comparing across market types
At juried craft fairs, the organizer's acceptance process provides some external verification — the work was reviewed and found to meet a threshold of quality and originality. At open markets, no such review occurred. This does not make open markets unreliable, but it does mean the quality assessment falls entirely to the buyer. Understanding which type of market you are attending gives context to how much verification work you need to do yourself.
